Deadliest Storm of 2011 Strikes

In the early hours of Saturday, April 16th severe storms ripped through a large section of our country leaving death and destruction in its path. Striking the small town (population 350) of Boone’s Chapel, Alabama, the town was practically destroyed by the storms yielding high winds. Eye witnesses from the event said they had little warning to seek shelter, and after they did, the events lasted less than a minute. Upon returning to the open they were devastated with what they found: “‘When I shined the light out there I could see it was all gone,’ Henley Hollon said. ‘Two mobile homes had been ripped from their foundations, and all that remained Saturday morning were wooden steps and flowerbeds.’”

The winds destroyed this small community; their elementary school was obliterated, many homes were destroyed, and the town’s main church had its roof blown off. It was something that the town simply is having a hard time dealing with. Unfortunately that was not where the storm stopped; in Alabama alone there were 4 confirmed tornadoes that touched down and nationwide there have been 17 confirmed deaths from the storm system. With this much chaos it is easy to see how this storm system has been the most deadly so far in 2011.
